About Erwin

Introduction

State Representative Erwin Cain (R - Hopkins County), is running to become District Judge of the 62nd Judicial District. Erwin is an attorney with 24 years of courtroom experience, former Hopkins County Republican Chairman, and a small businessman.

Why I'm Running

District Judges can have significant power over our lives. Their influence can extend to our calendars, our wallets, and even our very existence. A judge’s role is to apply the law fairly and impartially.

Over the years activist judges have exceeded that authority by replacing the law with their opinions. In doing so, the judiciary has become at times arbitrary and capricious. It is critical that judges refrain from activism and apply the law as written fairly and impartially. I will be a judge who strictly construes the law to bring stability, predictability and fairness to the 62nd judicial district. As a legislator I made every effort to arrest the growth of government, to make it more efficient and responsible and to prevent its intrusion into our lives and liberties. I will use that same restraint as a judge.

The law is my first love. I have tried cases in Texas for 24 years. I have argued the law, I have made the law, I desire to judicially apply the law, and I understand the difference.

I started and have owned my law firm and other businesses for most of my adult life. Hope, my wife of 23 years and I have 3 beautiful children. I bring the life experience needed to balance justice with mercy. I am acutely aware that I answer to a higher power. I understand that when someone is in a lawsuit, divorce, or faces criminal charges, I must employ wisdom, impartiality, sound judgment, and temperance. My training, experience, and convictions qualify me for the role of District Judge.

Political Involvement

Erwin, 51, is the current Texas State Representative in House District 3. Erwin previously served as Chairman of the Hopkins County Republican Party, which has experienced strong growth in the past several years. Erwin has also worked to promote conservative principles across East Texas by launching and chairing the Northeast Texas GOP Chairmen’s Coalition. The group is comprised of Republican leaders in over 20 counties across the region.

Law Practice

Erwin’s law practice extends throughout East and Northeast Texas, where he has defended his clients against frivolous lawsuits. He has owned his own law firm since 1994.

Business Experience

A small businessman, Erwin owns a real estate investment company. In college, Cain served as Texas state president of the Junior Collegiate Distributive Education Club of America (DECA). At the time, DECA was the nation’s 2nd largest scholastic organization and focused on training young entrepreneurs for the business world.

In 1982, Erwin earned an Associate degree in Management & Marketing from Kilgore Junior College. He graduated from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University – Texarkana) in 1985 with a Bachelor degree in Management and Marketing.
